Fuse board and consumer unit upgrades in Sittingbourne

Fuse board and consumer unit upgrades in Sittingbourne

The fuse board, or consumer unit, is the control centre of your electrics. Older boards with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection do not give the protection a modern home expects, and a new consumer unit adds safety devices that disconnect the supply quickly if a fault occurs.

MayBird Electrics replaces old fuse boards with modern consumer units in homes in Sittingbourne and the surrounding area.

  • Each circuit labelled and tested
  • Good time to add new circuits

Signs your fuse box needs replacing

An upgrade is often a good idea when the board is old, when it still has rewireable fuses, when it has no RCD protection, or when it is hot, damaged or cracked. It also makes sense when you are adding circuits for a new kitchen or an electric vehicle charge point, or when an inspection report recommends it.

It is also a good time to check the wiring that feeds the board, so we look at the condition of what is connected before we start.

What happens when we replace a consumer unit

The power is turned off while the old board is removed and the new one fitted, so we plan the work around you. Each circuit is reconnected, labelled and tested, and the new board is checked before the power comes back on.

Work like this is covered by the Building Regulations, so we explain what is needed, carry out the installation, test every circuit and tell you what has been done.

What affects the cost of a consumer unit upgrade

The cost depends on how many circuits the board has, the type of protection fitted, the condition of the wiring and earthing connected to it, and where the board is. If testing finds a problem with the existing wiring, that may need putting right before the new board is fitted.

We explain what is included in the quote and what the testing finds, so you know what you are paying for.
